That’s not how it’s supposed to be.

Sawamura slowly sat up in bed while gripping his blanket.  Staring into the blank spaces of night, the sun had yet to make an appearance.  His phone read 3:11am, but he was wide-awake.
The merry-go-round of recollection whirled in his head.  Though he’d gotten over it (or so he thought), once in a while, the bladed thoughts would reappear to saw through his confidence.

Boss, you shouldn’t have apologized to me.  He thought…no.  We all believed that Furuya would be able to pull through.

He closed his eyes in a pained manner, not yet ready to face what kept bludgeoning his head.  The one notion that threatened to show his bitterness.

Does the “Ace” merit so much trust when I actually delivered?

I thought you trusted me too, even if I was a relief.  And you’ve taken me off innings even when I asked for them.
I’m human too, you know.

Quietly, he got out of bed and went out to run.
The fresh air felt nice against his skin, but he wished his friend the tire was there with him.  After all, it had seen him struggle from the very start and didn’t give him lip or tease him about wanting to be the Ace.
But with these little tortures, in order to prepare for the moment that would eventually come, he loved baseball above everything.

That’s what kept him going.

At some point, each improvement became more and more narrow.  As you try to get to the summit, it’s harder to refine all the things you’ve learned.  When do I get off this mountain and climb another one?
I’ve been here for a few years now.

I’m surprised I haven’t broken down yet.

Helplessly, he stopped and pointed his head to the sky as he felt the water accumulating around his eyelids.

I keep shouting because I don’t want to cry.  I’m never going to give in to my own weakness!

A few minutes from the dorm, beyond the footbridge but not past the high stone wall, he heard soft grunts followed by the swing of a bat.  When his eyes focused, they opened widely at the captain practicing at this time of the night.

He didn’t reach out though.  With all these ugly feelings, he also didn’t want to break the captain’s concentration.

Just when does Cap practice if he’s always with us?  Did you spend a lot of time with my mentor?  How much time did it take for you to be able to analyze everything in minute detail, process it, and be able to find a solution all at the same time?

How do I catch up when I’m already doing the hardest that I can?

So, when will you practice with me next?  Although I understand Furuya has priority, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.
You were my goal from the beginning.

Above everyone, I want you to acknowledge me.

Just as he was about to turn back the other way, Miyuki waved him over.   Without thinking twice, Sawamura silently stood about 18.44 meters away.  The captain nodded his head and positioned himself to swing.  Though his hands were already tired, he wouldn’t lose to exhaustion.

There were only a few months left and the calendar days tore off the wall faster than he blinked.

Even if he teased all of them, it was his defense mechanism.  It was just enough distance not to graffiti the wall of his heart with all the things he still lacked, the lessons he still needed to embed,

the distance that suddenly became too vast.

He keeps growing, but I don’t pick the numbers.

Sawamura threw one imaginary ball after the other and Miyuki replied with a confident swing at every pitch.  But his excitement was at the way he could clearly see each one in his mitt, after he’d swung.

I want to catch these balls.  They’re all so interesting!

If I tell you that, you’ll think I’m joking.  I knew it when Rei-chan had that certain look when you first came to view our school.

You are special, Eijun.  I know because I’ve watched you from the beginning.

Then, the Captain stuck out his tongue and shook his head, balancing his bat on his shoulder.  “That change up still needs work.  It didn’t even get to the base.”

Sawamura’s jaw dropped at the fact that while they were having a moment together, the captain popped him out of their small, yet waking reverie.  He began to laugh.  It was very Miyuki-sempai-esque.

Then, it dawned on him.

Even if it seems like I’m delusional…when they think I don’t feel anything every time my efforts mean nothing to anyone…

You always look at me in the eye.
And that’s enough for now.

But when you graduate, who will I turn to when I don’t want to talk?

Before he could take them back, tears finally fell.  Miyuki jogged over and dropped his bat beside their feet.  He locked his arm over Sawamura’s head and glanced at the tightly clenched fists.

He wanted to ask, but he had inklings of what this was about.
When people think you’re good, they expect more.  But what happens to the people who desperately look forward with optimism and fight with all their soul so that they won’t break down?

“I’m glad I was here practicing.”

He took a deep breath and pulled his head closer.  “You don’t need to prove anything, Eijun.  No one’s going to listen you shout.  Besides, it can get annoying.”
Sawamura’s shoulders moved as he chuckled in between the drops of water falling to the ground.

Nothing ever really fazed the captain, but he wasn’t going to give up his position.  Not even when their summer ended.

His parents distantly watched.  People kept away because he could be prickly, but this one person always reached out to him, making sure of his well-being.  Eijun admired him, but he was the first to tickle him silly with all his fortitude.

He’d caught up to him before he had time to breathe.
Eijun never accepted defeat.  Accepting this challenge, he’d never relinquish that.

I need to keep pushing my limits while moving forward so that you’ll keep chasing after me.
Even when we graduate, I won’t let our connection wither so easily.

We still have more art to create.

“You just take what's yours.”  His eyes darted to the side at the figure off in the distance with the most serious gaze.  “They won’t question you then.”

Okumura growled by the bridge.  This time, it wasn’t just his imagination framing his point of view for their exchange.

Sawamura looked up as Miyuki stepped back.

“I want to become the kind of pitcher that you wouldn’t want to catch for anyone else.”

Sawamura lifted his hand as if he was wearing his glove and the captain genuinely smiled, tapping the back of the invisible glove.

What will I ever do with you, Eijun?

“I wonder how long you’ll make me wait.”

Owari.  / The End.

Author’s note: Going on ups and downs with this anime, I’d have to say Sawamura grew on me.  (Haruichi and Cheetahmochi too…I find myself pumping my fist every time Cheetah’s up because he just delivers.  And he’s a punk…*squeal squeal squeal*)    I mean, the fact that he consistently tried to think about his team even if there were so many moments he could have gotten angry, bitter, and unfocused over his predicaments.  Then, there’s Miyuki.  Latently reminds me of flirty Fuji Syusuke with the teasing genius (also genius teasing seems to be accurate as well) and then Wolf Boy is just plain adorable (I mean for me, he’s like a chibi version of a more serious Miyuki).
I couldn’t go back from these thoughts, so here we are.  Eh heh heh…  ^^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

I actually wanted to make a comedic fic for Eyeshield 21, but this took over my brain.  (I still can’t believe I’ve tried to write for new fandoms this year, but I’m glad I could expand because that meant I was diving deeper.  It’s a scary place, but one I think I need to plunge into.)

I hope you enjoyed this because I really liked making it!

Love,
Yui
