“You could’ve chosen anyone.  So why him?”

The clicking of the laptop continued between them.

Hiruma had anticipated the many ways Mamori would confront him.  He’d viewed all the scenarios in his head.  In each one, no matter how Sena would reveal it to her, she’d accept it and let him know that she’d always support him.  She wouldn’t question why they hadn’t told her and not even be pissed about it.

It'd all come down to why he’d made this particular choice because there was no way Sena would’ve come to this very option by himself, especially at this point at time.

He smirked to himself.  This was the reason he’d agreed to her being their manager in the first place.  She never sweated the small stuff (only when it came to cream puffs though, and that was a whole other issue in itself).  Her responses were never the typical ones.

If they had been, he’d never have spoken to her in the first place.

She was always categorized as “interesting” along with “annoying”, yet that wasn’t a minus on his part.  As in this scenario, she never shied away from a fight.  He knew exactly why they never messed with her even if most counted her as one of the top beauties of the school.
She never needed saving.

But before he could even reply, she added, “Thank you.”

His eyes opened, but his fingers continued to type (albeit a tad slower due to the shock).

“He wouldn’t have come to this point if it weren’t for you.”  Mamori sat on top of the desk next to Hiruma, facing the chalkboard.  From her profile, she was struggling to verbalize how elated, distressed, and shocked she felt simultaneously.
“I’ve never seen him so happy, yet determined until he stood next to me and said my name with his uniform.  But I…”  She couldn’t help the tears that threatened to fall down despite her pride.  “I feel proud of him, but far away too.”

It was more than protecting him.  They were close to the point that she worried when she’d begun to think he’d always be that way when it was impossible to always stay the same.

“He found a step towards becoming a man.  Why would you cry over that?  He’d find that path eventually.

With or without you.”

“I thought we’d always be together,” was the first thought that came to her mind.  “It’s the same as breathing.”
It was just the way it was.

It had all come just so fast.
She knew Hiruma was telling her the cruel, natural truth, but there was a little part of her that protested with all her might.  She wouldn’t have been able to express this to Sena, so she’d kept it to herself.
But Hiruma shot it back to her point-blank.

She sighed, wiped her tears and smiled.  Bowing her head down, she grabbed the edges of the desk as tinges of orange-red began to envelop the room.

“Why did you teach him something dangerous?”

He finally stopped typing.  “I didn’t.  I just showed him a way that he could win at.”

It was still his choice to take that or keep things as they are.  Do you really think he was satisfied hiding?
Quick stills of his father’s matches brightened and dimmed in his mind.

As he leaned over to look over the next set of plays he’d devised, Mamori took out one piece of paper and overlayed it on the screen.  Their sheets overlapped for they’d come to the same conclusion.
He began to laugh at the way she’d countered him.

But then, she quickly took another one and switched it with the one on the screen.  She’d reached that one percent mark where she’d come up with a new play that even he’d not thought of.
It tickled him silly to no end, but equally, it drove him crazy.

“Once in a while, you’re really useful,” he commented.

With that remark, he took the folder of hand-drawn plays and they analyzed each one together until it was twilight…

As she got up to go home, she fixed her bag and left the crimson folder with him.  “Don’t you ever rest?”
He waved his hand and blew a bubble with his gum.  She was about to leave with the usual clicking of keys when he called behind her and tossed something straight into her hands.
“Um…thanks?”
He didn’t look up as she went down the hall and down the stairs, but curious as to what it was, mid-way to the first floor, she opened it on the staircase.  Out popped out a devil bats mascot shaped cream puff.
“Oh!”
Then, she realized that the name of the shop was printed in small font on the side.  The puff was from a famous shop in Ginza that she’d heard about and always wanted to try.

“But how…?”  Her jaw dropped, shook her head, and grinned as her eyes wandered towards the direction of his classroom.

When he’d heard her little joyous squeal, he bit his lower lip.

Yeah.  For sure, this one’s a keeper.
